What Should I Tell Families Who Have Questions?

Families with questions about their child’s development can call any New York Child Resource Center location to speak with someone who can answer their questions. Services are available in English and Spanish.

This website includes parent resource guides that providers can share with families. Topics include speech and language development, behavior, sensory and emotional development, physical development, and getting help when a parent is concerned about their child’s development.

For families who are unsure whether their concern is significant enough to discuss, providers can encourage them to call and describe what they are seeing. The family does not need to have a diagnosis before asking questions about developmental support.

The Early Intervention Program is a public program funded by New York State and county governments for infants and toddlers under three years of age who have or are suspected of having a developmental delay or disability. If you have concerns about your child's development, you can contact the NYC Early Intervention Program by calling 311 to make a referral.

New York Child Resource Center, Inc. is approved by New York State and has a contract with New York City to provide Early Intervention services. Eligibility for the Early Intervention Program can be determined only by State-approved evaluators under contract with the municipality. If a child is found eligible, needed services are identified in collaboration with the parent and must be authorized by the municipality. The municipality arranges for service providers based on the individual needs of the child and family.

Services authorized through the Early Intervention Program are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to families, though health insurance may be accessed for reimbursement. When Early Intervention services are delivered in child care or community settings that require a fee, the parent is responsible for any associated costs with access to those settings.
