Child Development Evaluations NYC

If you have concerns about your child’s development, a child development evaluation can help you understand where your child is and what support may be available. New York Child Resource Center, Inc. has provided Early Intervention evaluations in New York City since 1993, with licensed and certified professionals experienced in assessing young children’s developmental needs.

What Is a Child Development Evaluation?

A child development evaluation is a careful look at how your child is growing and learning. During the evaluation, a team of licensed and certified professionals assesses your child across key areas of development, including:

  • Motor Skills: Physical abilities such as grasping, crawling, standing, and walking.
  • Language and Communication: How your child understands spoken language and uses words, sounds, or gestures to communicate.
  • Cognitive Abilities: Problem-solving, exploring, early learning skills such as sorting, matching, and cause-and-effect understanding.
  • Social and Emotional Development: How your child interacts with caregivers, other children, and new environments.
  • Adaptive Skills: Everyday abilities such as feeding, dressing, and participating in daily routines.

Parents and caregivers are an important part of the evaluation. What you observe at home, during play, and in everyday routines helps evaluators understand your child’s strengths and needs.

How Much Does a Child Development Evaluation Cost in NYC?

Early Intervention evaluations are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to participating families. If your child is found eligible for Early Intervention services, those services are also provided at no out-of-pocket cost. The Early Intervention Program is a public program funded by New York State and county governments. Your child’s health insurance may be accessed for reimbursement, but families are not charged.

Who Conducts the Evaluation?

Evaluations are conducted by a team of professionals who are licensed or certified and experienced in their areas of expertise. At New York Child Resource Center, our evaluators include professionals from areas such as Special Education, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work, and Psychology.

How Do Families Get Started?

In New York City, children are referred to the Early Intervention Program to begin the evaluation process. A parent, doctor, caregiver, or another person familiar with the child can help start a referral. Eligibility for the Early Intervention Program can be determined only by State-approved evaluators under contract with the municipality.

If you have questions about the referral process or about child development evaluations, our team can help. To learn more about how evaluations work and the full range of Early Intervention services available, visit our Programs & Services page. The municipality arranges for service providers based on the individual needs of the child and family.

Services authorized through the Early Intervention Program are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to families, though health insurance may be accessed for reimbursement.
